An Autumn Pause: Slow Living with Karmen

The October pause
There is a gentle pause to October. Summer’s bright energy begins to soften, the mornings grow quieter, and the light takes on that lovely golden quality that tells us autumn is here.
For me, this is an invitation to pause, too. Not to rush into a new season with a list of things to fix, but to notice what I am carrying, what I might gently release, and what deserves a little more space in the weeks ahead.
So, put the kettle on and settle in. This month, I am reflecting on a little less noise, a little more creativity, and the quiet comfort of candlelight.
Decluttering the mind, rather than the home
If you have been reading along with me, you will know that I often return to the idea of making space within ourselves, not just in our homes.
We can sort a cupboard or take a bag to the charity shop in an afternoon. The invisible things we carry can take longer: yesterday’s regrets, tomorrow’s worries, an unfinished conversation, or the feeling that we ought to be doing more.
Sometimes, we can be sitting in a peaceful room while our thoughts are busy elsewhere. I find it helps to notice that without turning it into another reason to be hard on myself.
Rather than trying to silence every thought, perhaps we can begin with a few gentle questions:
- Is this something I can act on today, or can I set it down for now?
- Is this worry asking for my attention, or am I going over the same ground?
- What is mine to take care of, and where might I need support?
- What would bring a little comfort or clarity to this moment?
There is no need to have every answer. Sometimes, simply writing a thought down, sharing it with someone we trust, or giving ourselves a quiet moment is a place to begin.
Making room for peace
Letting go does not mean pretending that nothing happened, or expecting ourselves to feel differently overnight. Some things need time, care and support.
For me, it can mean loosening my grip on a conversation I cannot change, being kinder to myself about a mistake I have learned from, or accepting that the future may look different from the picture I once imagined.
I want to make more room for faith, gratitude, wisdom, hope and joy. My faith reminds me that not every change has to happen around me; sometimes, the quieter change begins within, in how I meet the day and what I choose to carry forward.
This autumn, perhaps we can give ourselves permission to begin small. We do not need a complete overhaul. A little breathing space may be enough for today.
An autumn pause, by candlelight
I love the ‘ber’ months, from September through to December. They invite me to slow down and open my mind to creativity. Making candles and adding to my Karmen’s Candle Lights collection is one of the ways I enjoy sharing that seasonal feeling with you.

Of course, slow living is about more than candles. It is about making space for what matters: curling up with a good book, savouring a cup of tea, or enjoying a quiet evening without feeling we must fill every moment.
I like to think of my literary-themed candles as companions to those slower moments. A small pleasure, a familiar ritual, and a little warmth as the evenings draw in.
Creating a gentle evening ritual
As the sun sets a little earlier, I find comfort in marking the end of the busy part of the day. It need not be an elaborate routine. A few simple choices can make an evening feel more unhurried.
- Step away from the screens. Put your phone aside for a little while and give yourself a break from the stream of news and notifications.
- Make a comfortable corner. Clear a small space, bring over a favourite book, and make a cup of tea.
- Enjoy a little candlelight. Place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from draughts and anything that could catch fire. Follow its care instructions and never leave it burning unattended.
There is no perfect way to spend this time. Read a few pages, jot down a thought, or simply sit for a moment. You do not have to make it productive.
Finding space for creativity
In my spare time, I love to paint with oils on canvas. I use the impasto technique, building rich layers of paint that give the surface texture and depth.
Being creative is a wonderful way for me to bring a little stillness to my mind. There is something absorbing about working with colour and texture, allowing a painting to take shape at its own pace.
Over the next few months, I look forward to sharing more of my artwork with you, both to enjoy here and to purchase from my shop.
Perhaps there is something you have been longing to return to, too: painting, baking, knitting, gardening, or a notebook that has been waiting patiently in a drawer. A small pocket of time is a lovely place to start.
A gentle invitation to slow down
If candlelight is part of your autumn ritual, you are warmly invited to explore my autumn candles collection. I hope you find something to accompany a quiet evening or a few chapters of a much-loved book.
Above all, I hope this season offers you moments to breathe, create and enjoy the simple things, without another list of expectations.
What is one small thing you are doing this week to slow down and welcome autumn? I would love to hear about it in the comments.
