August - Week 3 Slow Living with Karmen

The Art of the Mindful Pause.

Declutter your mind rather than your home.

The hardest cleaning you will do is not cleaning your home; it is cleaning your mind.

A house can be polished, vacuumed and decorated. Kitchens can be deep cleaned, windows made to sparkle and rooms rearranged. Wardrobes, cabinets, furniture, clothes and accessories can all be sorted in a single afternoon, with unwanted pieces passed on to a charity shop. But the mind carries invisible emotional clutter that can remain for years if we do not deliberately confront it.

Why is it difficult to declutter the Mind?

Some people are exhausted not because life is unbearably difficult but because their minds are overcrowded with yesterday’s regrets, tomorrow’s fears, other people’s opinions, imaginable disasters, old disappointments, unresolved conversations, and questions that have no answers.

You can be physically sitting in a peaceful room while mentally fighting battles in ten different places.

That is why mental decluttering is not a luxury; it is a form of wisdom.

You must learn to ask yourself:

Is this thought helping me or harming me?

Is this fear warning me or controlling me?

Is this person adding value to my life or constantly draining my spirit?

Is this problem mine to solve or am I carrying what belongs to someone else?

Not every thought deserves your attention,

Not every opinion deserves your reaction

Not every person deserves permanent access to your peace.

True mindfulness doesn’t require hours of silent meditation on a mountaintop. It can be found in the smallest, ordinary moments of your day:

Sometimes the greatest transformation begins when you stop trying to rearrange everything outside you and start cleaning what is accumulated inside you.

I’ll share a gentle guide to decluttering the mind in next week’s blog.

Creating an Evening Ritual

As the sun begins to set a little earlier each day, the evening becomes the perfect canvas for mindfulness. Transitioning from the busy energy of the day into a restful night is an essential practice for a slow lifestyle.

One of the simplest ways to signal to your mind that it is time to slow down is through the power of scent and light.

  1. Disconnect: Turn off your television, computer, and smartphone screens.
  2. Clear the Space: Open a window to let the cool evening air circulate.
  3. Light a Candle: Striking a match and watching the flame catch is an instant mindful anchor.

I am so pleased to introduce the perfect scent companion for calming the mind with the launch of my Lavender Fields candle.

Shakespeare called this flowering herb “hot lavender” because of its warming scent. Lavender relaxes the mind, washing away all the strains and tensions of your life and settles  into a mood  so relaxing and peaceful. A time to meditate or conduct visualisation, by staring at the flickering flame of your Lavender Fields candle.

Aromatherapy Oilj

If you were to choose only one aromatherapy oil it would surely be Lavender. It is universal in its appeal and in its usage. From the Latin word Alvarez, to wash, it is native to the countries bordering the Mediterranean, and was cultivated by the Romans for use in their baths and for many other uses. Its dried flowers have long been used to scent linen and cupboards. The fragrance of Lavender is caused by shining oil glands embedded in the small evergreen shrub.

Some drops of Lavender in a natural base oil and applied to the body will almost certainly remove the tensions and stresses of the day.  You will feel these tensions smoothed away as the Lavender has its relaxing effect and helps you to unwind.

If you are suffering from insomnia, you should consider inhaling the aroma of Lavender mixed with a few drops of Chamomile or Orange from a little bottle of the oil kept by your bedside. Please note, Lavender aromatherapy oils is not suitable for pregnant women.

Finding Stillness in the Heart of August

Slow living isn't about doing nothing. It is about doing ordinary things with intention. As August gently moves towards September, we can pause and gather our energy back to the present moment.

The Art of the August Pause

When the days are long and warm, our energy naturally expands outward. While that brightness is beautiful, it can sometimes leave us feeling scattered or depleted. A slower rhythm allows us to return to ourselves.

  • Feel the warmth of the sun on your skin for just sixty seconds.
  • Listen to the early morning birds before checking your phone.
  • Walk barefoot on the grass to feel grounded and connected.

Which of these small moments resonates most with you? I would love to hear in the comments below.
