Hello September: Week 2 | Slow Living with Karmen

There is a particular gentleness to the second week of September. The mornings feel a little crisper, the light begins to soften, and the rhythm of the day quietly changes. Summer has not quite left us, but autumn is beginning to make itself known.
For me, this is the perfect moment to pause. Not to rush into a new season with a list of things to fix, but to notice what I am carrying, what I can gently release, and what deserves more space in the weeks ahead.
Decluttering the mind, rather than the home
We often think of clearing as something we do to our homes. We polish, vacuum, sort cupboards and pass unwanted clothes or accessories on to a charity shop. There is something wonderfully satisfying about a tidy room.
But the most important clearing is not always visible. Emotional clutter can stay with us for years, quietly taking up space in our thoughts and our bodies. Old worries, unnecessary guilt, yesterday’s disappointments and the pressure to have everything worked out can all become rather heavy.
Perhaps your life does not need a complete reconstruction. Perhaps it needs a compassionate clearing. A little more room for faith, gratitude, wisdom, purpose, hope and joy.
The September pause
When the days are long and bright, our energy naturally moves outwards. We fill the diary, make plans, go here and there, and enjoy every last golden evening. That brightness is lovely, but it can also leave us feeling scattered.
A slower rhythm gives us the chance to gather ourselves again. Mindfulness does not require hours of silence on a mountaintop. It can be found in the smallest, most ordinary moments of the day:
- Feel the warmth of the morning sun on your skin for one quiet minute.
- Listen to the early birds before reaching for your phone.
- Step outside without headphones and notice the changing air, leaves and birdsong.
- Walk barefoot on the grass, if the weather allows, and feel yourself come back to the present.
- Make a warm drink slowly, noticing the steam, the scent and the first comforting sip.
Which small moment would bring you the most peace this week?

Creating an evening ritual
As the sun sets a little earlier, the evening becomes a natural invitation to soften. Moving from the busyness of the day into a restful night does not have to be complicated. A few small signals can help the mind understand that it is safe to slow down.
- Disconnect: Put away your television, computer and phone for a little while before bed.
- Clear the space: Open a window and let the cool evening air move through the room.
- Make something warm: Brew a cup of tea, prepare a simple supper or settle beneath a favourite blanket.
- Light a candle: Let the soft glow mark the gentle boundary between doing and simply being.
The candle ritual: setting a quiet intention
Lighting a candle is more than creating a cosy atmosphere. It can become a small boundary between the noise of the day and the peace of the evening.
As you strike the match, take one deep breath. As the wick catches, let out a long, slow exhale. Imagine releasing the unfinished list, the difficult conversation and the thoughts that do not need your attention tonight.
Then choose one simple intention. It might be:
“In this space, I have nowhere else to be, nothing else to do, and no one else to please.”
Watch the flame for a moment. Let it remind you that you are here, now, and that this moment is enough.

Introducing the Woodland Walks Candle
I am so pleased to share a gentle companion for these early autumn evenings, the Woodland Walks Candle from Karmen’s Autumn Collection.
Hand-poured in a generous 500g size, it has the comforting warmth of an autumn kitchen, with notes of apple pie, cinnamon, nutmeg, pumpkin, vanilla and gingerbread. It is the sort of scent that makes a room feel welcoming, whether you are settling down with a book, enjoying a quiet cup of tea or simply taking five minutes for yourself.
As September turns towards October, let the candle become part of your evening pause. Trim the wick before lighting, allow the first burn to reach the edges of the wax, and never leave a burning candle unattended.
A few September intentions
Decluttering the mind of noise can make room for a deeper kind of peace. This month, I am reminding myself:
- Every door that would disturb my peace may remain firmly closed.
- What once felt difficult may become possible, one steady step at a time.
- I can meet challenges with courage, choices with wisdom, and uncertainty with discernment.
- I do not need to mistake noise for direction.
- I will not carry yesterday’s failures into today’s possibilities.
- My future is not limited by my past.
- Where there is confusion, I can pause and look for clarity.
- I am grateful for the gift of life and for the strength that sustains me.
Slow living in September is not about doing everything perfectly. It is about aligning our daily rhythm with the changing season and noticing what brings us back to ourselves.
Perhaps your slow ritual is a morning cup of tea, a walk without your phone, a warm bowl of soup, an early night or the flicker of candlelight beside an open book. Whatever stillness looks like in your corner of the world, I would love to hear about it in the comments below.
With love,
Karmen
