How to Make Soy Wax Candles

Introduction to Melt and Pour Soy Wax Candle Making.

Making soy wax candles is a rewarding and creative process, designing signature candles with an infusion of scents and gorgeous designs. The melt and pour method is perfect for beginners, requiring minimal equipment and offering beautiful results.

What You'll Need

  • Soy wax
  • Candle wicks - ensure the wick size is compatible with the container size
  • Sticky base tabs
  • Glass jars or containers (compliant with CPL regulations, heat resistant containers from a reputable candle supplier).
  • Double boiler
  • Thermometer
  • Fragrance oils from a reputable candle supplier
  • Stainless Steel stirrer
  • Stainless steel pouring jug
  • Wick centre device or paper straws
  • Face Mask
  • Gloves
  • CLP compliant safety labels to place underneath the candle container
  • Keep the environment ventilated at all times
  • Do not discard of soy wax by pouring down the sink, toilet  or drains. Any soy wax left over be creative and make soy wax melts or let the soy wax harden wrap in paper and discard safely.

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Measure Your Soy Wax

Calculate how much wax you need by filling your container with wax flakes, then doubling that amount. Remember Soy wax reduces in volume when melted.

2. Melt the Wax

Place your soy wax flakes in a double boiler over medium heat. Stir occasionally until completely melted, make sure air bubbles are popped, I use cocktail sticks to pop, depending on the soy wax type temperature approximately 170-180°F (77-82°C).

3. Prepare Your Container

While the wax cools, secure your wick to the bottom centre of your container using the metal tab. Use a wick centre device or paper straws to keep wick straight.

4. Add Fragrance

Once soy wax is melted remove from heat and let cool to about 140-150°F (60-65°C). Wear face mask and gloves, open the window to ventilate your workspace. Add your fragrance oil at approximately 6-10% of the wax weight and stir gently for 1-2 minutes. Pop the air bubbles

5. Pour the Wax

When the wax reaches 120-140°F (49-60°C), slowly pour the melted soy wax it into your prepared container, leaving about half an inch at the top of your vessel.

6. Let It Set

Allow your candle to cure for at least 24-48 hours before trimming the wick to 1/4 inch.

Tips for Success

  • Always use a thermometer for best results
  • Avoid stirring too vigorously to prevent air bubbles
  • Let candles cure for 1-2 weeks for optimal scent throw
  • Keep wicks centered for an even burn

Now you're ready to create beautiful, hand-poured soy wax candles! Experiment with different scents and containers to make each candle uniquely yours.
